Rug Cleaning - A Sheepskin Rug

Here is a rug cleaning tip for those of you that have a large Sheepskin rug.

I find that my rug is too big for my washing machine and the pile is too thick for my cleaning appliances.

1. Boil 200g of natural soap flakes with 3 tablespoons of olive oil in 1 litre of water or use

1 teaspoon of baby shampoo

2. Add to a bath of warm water.

Shake the rug vigorously outside to remove any loose debris

Immerse rug hairy side down into the bath.

Wash thoroughly and rinse

Squeeze out as much water as possible and dab with a white clean towels all over both sides.

Brush the damp rug with a wire brush (like a dog grooming brush)in one direction

Hang outside to dry or lay flat to dry. Make sure that you do not submit the rug to hot temperatures so avoid hot sun or tumble dryers.

Great tip, I had one of these rugs when I was kid. I remember it in my bedroom and I also remember it becoming dirtier and dirtier and more and more matted. I don’t think we ever washed it only vacuumed it.

Your tip is very simple and easy to do and I wish I did this when I had a rug like this. instead it got so bad that we had to throw it away after only a few years which was a shame because I liked that rug a lot.

Often you see these rugs in a bad state at garage sales, so this would be a good way to try and bring some of them back to life at a fraction of the cost of buying a new one.  This is worth doing for something which can add a little bit of glamour to your rooms.
