I discovered this trick using clear nail polish a few years ago when I was fed up with rust rings in my bathroom.
Coat the bottom of a metal item you may be using in the kitchen or bathroom so it doesn't leave a rust stain on the counter

Great tip Glenys. I haven't heard of this before but it sounds a great idea.
I have a few items in my bathroom and kitchen which are made from metal and which after awhile leave rust rings on my bath and kitchen sink. It is really unsightly and shortens the life of the metal object too as soon as it gets a little too rusty I can’t bear to look at it anymore and so usually get rid of it if I can’t clean it up properly.
The nail varnish is a great idea because it will provide a protective cover not only for the actual metal object and will slow down the rusting process but also the surface which it sits on.
I will give this a go and see how it goes, I will let you know.
UPDATE
I tried this method and yes it works great for a few weeks and then I find that the polish starts to flake off a little and so needs to be re administered. but I guess this is a better option that spending lots of time, energy and money on all those so called cleaners.
I bought a lot of cheap clear nail polish from my local dollar store, I also find it at the charity store too.
I also use this clear polish to protect my artwork. I like to cover books with different things and I like the way the polish makes the cover go hard. Sometimes I use it in small areas and sometimes I give the whole cover a very light coating using a small paint brush.
